Your Friend is the recording moniker of Taryn Miller, the Lawrence, Kansas-based multi-instrumentalist. She released her debut EP, Jekyll/Hyde, shortly after signing to Domino in February 2014.
This hectic opening to 2014 continued with a tour slot with Courtney Barnett and a triumphant visit to SXSW. When it came to writing her debut full-length release later that year, however, Miller initially struggled with the difficulty of identifying what art truly meant to her. Having sought a wide array of advice, Miller took direction from perhaps an unlikely source – her former high school teacher, who simply said: “Art is just where you are now. Where are you right now?” With this valuable adage firmly in mind, Miller began recording her debut album, Gumption, with producer Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Deerhunter) at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn. The result is a brooding blend of textures; all drones, loops and found sounds.
Since the release of Gumption in January 2016, Miller has gone on to tour with labelmates, Alex G and Porches, as well as embarking on US tours with Kurt Vile and Flock Of Dimes. A hardworking artist in the purest sense, we await the emergence of Miller's next batch of songs with bated breath.
